Oline Johnson

Oline Johnson went to be with her lord and savior on December 28, 2018 at the age of 88. Though “Mammaw” is the term that most people used to refer to her, her birth name was Minnie Edna Oline. I’m not sure when she decided she wanted to be called Oline, but that is the name she preferred. Oline was born on July 15, 1930 in Ripley, MS. She had 8 siblings, 4 brothers and 4 sisters. She grew up during the great depression and had many stories to tell about growing up on the farm, picking cotton, and her pet red hen. When Oline was fifteen, she left Mississippi and moved to Memphis, TN. In Memphis, Oline worked at a diner and in a fan making factory to support herself. She met the love of her life, Hugh Don, at the age of eighteen. They met on a blind date at the Memphis Fair. Oline married Hugh Don Johnson on April 8, 1949 and they settled down in Memphis. Over the next 19 years, they had four children- Donald, Ron, April, and Carmen. During this time, Oline was a preacher’s wife, as Hugh Don was a preacher at the Whitehaven Church of God, and mainly a stay at home mom. In 1979, the family moved to Beacon, TN to pursue Hugh Dons passion of owning and living in a school house that he once attended. They also owned bookstores in Lexington and Parsons and Oline worked at the Lexington Walmart as a door greeter for nearly 20 years. Oline has always loved the Lord and never shied away from a conversation about how much God did in her life. My heart is warm knowing her final resting place is with her heavenly father.Oline was preceeded in death by her parents, John and Maybel Rowland, brothers John, David, George and Roy; sisters Verde, Angie, Louise, and Alma. Oline was also preceeded in death by her husband, Hugh Don Johnson. She is survived by her sons, Donald Johnson (Cindy) and Ron Johnson (Cindy); daughters, April Fulgham (Bobby) and Carmen Jordan (Steve); grandchildren Scott Johnson, Trevor Johnson, Mallory Johnson, Steven Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Michelle Clopp, Erik Price, Ariel Holley, Stephanie Jordan and Daniel Jordan. Also survived by her greatgrandchildren Faith, Tristan, Drake, Isabella, Elijah, Asher; and her great greatgrandchildren Levi and Briley. She was a beloved woman, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 2 at 12PM at Reed’s Chapel in Lexington with burial to follow in Duke Cemetery in Beacon, TN. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 11AM-7PM and Wednesday from 10AM until service.
