Mary Elizabeth Holmes

Mary Elizabeth Small Sego Holmes, known as “Gran”, was a devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. One of nine children born to the late Onnie E. and Lela McAdams Small on March 25, 1926 in Henderson County, she went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 5, 2022 in Lexington, TN, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Elvin Sego in 1968 and Harvel P. Holmes in 1980; one sister, Mabel (Wes) Pounders; five brothers, Willard (Doris) Small, Waymond (Obie) Small, John M. (Dovie) Small, Ray (Virginia) Small, and Charles Small; one son-in-law, Ken Gilliam,; and three sister-on-laws, Excelle Brown, Estelle Blankenship, and Corine Hearn. She was blessed with a large family and cherished by her children: one son, James Michael (Debbie) Sego of Collierville, TN; three daughters, Diane (Dan) Tompkins of Vaiden, MS, Marilyn Gilliam and Barbara (Glen) Pratt, both of Lexington, TN; and two step daughters, Carolyn Smith and Kay Gurley, both of Memphis, TN. She is also survived by one sister, Helen Hinson; one brother, Elwood (Carole) Small; and one sister-in-law, Oweda Small; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all the staff at Oak Haven Assisted Living Facility and special caregivers, Sharon Wood and Jolene Mills, who were so instrumental in bringing happiness to her in the last years of her life. Special appreciation is also extended to the personnel and healthcare workers at Briarwood Elder Community Living Center for the wonderful care given to her as a resident there. Mary Elizabeth Holmes was a homemaker and former factory worker. She enjoyed growing and caring for her beautiful flowers, but time spent with her family and cooking special meals for them were the things that brought her the most pleasure. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had a special place in her heart, and she deeply loved each one of them. She had a unique way of bringing a smile to the faces of those who were around her. Deeply rooted in her faith, she was a member of Broad Street Church of Christ where she attended services regularly during her active years. Graveside services are scheduled at Sand Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery on Friday, July 8 at 11AM with Bro. Marty Comer Officiating. Visitation will be at Sand Ridge Baptist Church Worship Center on Friday from 10AM until service.
